The Standard C108A is a very unusual radio. It has flea power
transmitt, useable if you are close to a repeater, but much too low to
be your only radio. The C108A, however, has one of the finest
receivers I have ever used. It is a nearly perfect rig for
the traveler who likes to listen to the 2 mtr chatter in a hotel, but
who plans to do little or no transmitting. The transmit audio on the
rig, by the way, is excellent. The 108A also has a hot airband
receiver and some folks use them to listen to airport comms while
traveling to pass the time. It is so smaull, it has also been used by
friends who travel a lot internationally to "smuggle" in inside their
briefcases, with the antenna removed, to countries that don't
appreciate people carrying HTs. Again, they use it to listen with no
plan to do much transmitting.
A list nice feature of the 108A is that it only requires two
AA batteries to run it a long time. Again, very nice for the traveler.
I thought mine was over-priced when I bought it, but now I would not
part with it.
If anyone else uses this radio, I would enjoy swapping ideas on
features not shown in the manual.

Don't be deceived by thinking that the built in antenna tuners will do the
job of an honest-to-goodness tuner. Generally speaking, the Japanese rigs
with built-in antenna tuners have them because the final amplifiers use an
SWR fold-back protective design and need to see an almost perfect 1:1 SWR.
You might say that they're there to compensate for a design shortcoming.
Also, the built-ins will only typically match an impedance range of
between 15 and 130 ohms which isn't much good if you plan on using a
non-resonant multiband antenna.

Subject: How's the IC-2700 Performance?
Anyone out there have experience with the ICOM IC-2700?
I am particularly interested in its receiver "intermod"
performance. It seems to have the right specs & features but
many of the late model dual band radios have anemic receivers.
Any other comments on this or other dual band radios are
welcome.
Thanks,

The w21a has no keypad. The W21AT does. Both are pretty
similar, but the W21A is a bit harder to program given the lack of
direct entry.
At the current Tucker price, the radio is a bargin if you can
live without the keypad. 73 Dave AA5NU

I'm pretty sure that what you want is an Amphenol 80MC2M.
I haven't bought one of these in a long time, but they used
to be available in most any industrial electronics house and
were certainly available at all ham radio type places. Times
have changed, and now all I see at the ham stores are 8 pin
Kenwood, etc. type plugs. I've got a feeling that you can
still get them at the commercial houses that carry Amphenol
connectors (or whatever Amphenol is called these days).
Sigh.

Motorola National Parts. Find the local Motorola C&E in your area's
yellow pages under "Radios"...The parts person there can give you the 800
number to order from.
You will have to have a software license agreement on file before they
will sell you the software. They will FAX or mail one to you if you
request it.
Not the most inexpensive way to acquire Motorola Radio Software, but it is
currently the only legal way to do it.

I have a similar memory, only it was an original Communicator on 6 meters
and it was about 38 years ago.
You might enjoy ELECTRIC RADIO magazine. It's dedicated to vintage radio
hamming. PO Box 57, Hesperus, CO 81326, 303-247-4935 $28/year, $38 1st
class (and worth every penny!)

Try W7FG Vintage Manuals, 3300 Wayside Drive, Bartlesville, OK 74006,
800-807-6146 or 918-333-7893
Also, "Sam" at Golden Age Radio in Baltimore collects Gonset Communicators
and may be able to help. (Remind him that he got his Civil Defense
6-meter Communicator from me!) They're closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

Subject: Noise Abated VOX help!
On Oct. 29 my wife and I passed out No-Code Tech test! Now we are out to
pick up two hand held 2 meter radios. As some of you netters know, we are
planning to use them for snowmobile communication. I'd first like to thank
all the folks that have given me tips and suggestions. They have been very
useful. Now for another comment and question to netland.
I have learned of a push to talk mic that goes in ones ear and a
local snowmachiner/ham has used it with great effectiveness on a Kenwood
22AT so at the very least we can get set up with that rig. As he explained
it VOX would be a pain in the butt to set up and would require filters to
try to remove the noise of the engine. The questions are:
How would one remove audio like engine noise and still pass voice
"noise" through? Can one actually distinguish, electronically, between the
frequencies of a screaming snow machine and a screaming person? If such
filters exist, where might I find them? Is anyone familiar with a specific
VOX set up that they might recommend for snowmachine/helmet use? It would
have to be throat mic or an earplug mic to keep the mic from freezing over
with my breath, I think.
Any replies are appreciated. I can't get on Usenet so please reply
via this mailing or directly to me personally. Thanks.

I have my Kenwood TS-50S and my Icom IC-725 on the market right now so
that I can buy either the Omni VI or the Paragon II. From all indications
the Omni receiver is *the best* available. Everybody I know who has had
Ten Tec products has been pleased with their service too. I might add
that I'm originally from Tennessee and know the area pretty well where Ten
Tec is located and it's a place where the good old American work ethic is
alive and well. I hear they're nice folks.
